AFROS-Update cover two aspects.
1. Installable update to the ARAnyM based AFROS LiveCD distribution
2. Downloadable binaries of ARAnyM for PCLinuxOS and other Mandriva based distributions
3. Bootable sd-card image for Raspberry Pi with ARAnyM and m68k-cross-tools

Under AFROS it is intended to provide an up to date distribution that can be installed
from either the LiveCD boot desktop, or the host OS which is currently SLAX. It is hoped that
this update will then be adopted by the maintainers of the current AFROS and AFROS LiveCD
distribution downloads. These additions should not be limited to AFROS itself, but the
underlying OS's, FreeMiNT, and SLAX, to provide a smoother and more usable "everyday
desktop" experience, while providing the basis for protable development and proto-
typing environment.

The service provided by AFROS-update is:
1. a modern usable "every day desktop"
2. supply of a supplemental development environment (FuDE for AFROS)
3. supply of a supplemental alternative which may contain non-AFROS qualified applications

AFROS-UPDATE - 2016/06/18

A/ARAnyM/Atari ST FRee Operating System. AFROS was originally introduced to take advantage of ARAnyM's virtual 68040 Atari ST compatable machine. The original versions of AFROS were pegged to the ARAnyM version (v0.95), until the release of the LiveCD version in Dec 2008 (v8.12 = v0.97). afros-update should provide everything needed for an up to date OS for Atari ST computers that can run MiNT kernel.

UPDATE - 2016/06/18

Needed to add a few more sub-pages, to avoid the 110mb fiasco, as well as provide a wider variety of information. I only just noticed that the whole time I was developing afros-update, it was for AFROS LiveCD not the AFROS filesystem, which can also be downloaded. The script from-afros.sh probably works without changes, and from-hostos.sh works on Devuan or any other OS where /root/afros is accessible. (AFROS FS 8.12) (AFROS-Update 9.09)

ARAnyM is currently v1.0.2, but they have recently updated the repo to allow SCSI access on the host OS, combined with a free driver available from HDdriver creator Uwe Seimet (works on Hatari too). The Raspbian version works on Wheezy, and Devuan (Jessie) also has v1.0.2 available. (ARAnyM v1.0.2) (ARAnyM Repo) (ARAnyM/Hatari SCSI Driver)

MyAES is about to go to v0.97, and there is again a 68000 version, with custom minimint for TOS machines, currently being tested on Hatari emulator. Hopefully I can resurrect the zPro windfram source, and the BEOS type patch for the ERS windfram. (MyAES v0.96) (MyAES 68000 for TOS/Hatari)

XaAES has had loadable gradients and desktop background image since 1.18.cur, and a version 1.19.0 should not be too far away. (Helmuts Daily Freemint/XaAES builds) (final v1.18.0 Freemint)

GRADIENTS

This is an example of one of the new XaAES gradient styles that can be recompiled with the recolor.sh script. This is because the gradients are now includes, and currently come in six flavours, all based on the original blue and grey gradients, but with color tinges added to grey scales. The types of colors they generate allows them to be collectively called "The Pastel Collection", but I liked Rose, Aqua, Lime, Bronze, Peach and Mauve. (screenshots)

AES THEMES

There is a relatively simple way to get good quality textures to render in rez's greater than 8bit (256) color. The techniques described will gaurentee results for the highest quality possible for both XaAES and MyAES, both of which require different image formats to work with. These come from hours of painful testing, so that you dont have to, but can try undescribed techniques with those tools mentioned, or others you may have. (AES Skinning)

MyAES THEMES

I have located the skins I had on my "old" server, thanks to Archive.org I managed to find them again, however only the MyAES skins were archived. That means no XaAES info, and no Iconsets either. I have also decided to provide all those MyAES skins in one zip on the project file release system, where the XaAES themes can be found also. (original MyAES skins)

PREVIOUS UPDATE - 2016/06/12

I finally managed to get internet access again, permanent enough to allow SourceForge project management (via sftp). Back in 2013 I managed to provide updated PCLinuxOS files of ARAnyM. I went through hell and back after a dist-upgrade, which was a major change, turns out it was around the time systemd was introduced, which kind of explains a lot. Anyway I dont use PCLinuxOS anymore, and if you have an older machine (like my Lenovo/IBM) I recommend look at another distribution.

Which brings me to how I am able to now make these updates. Raspberry Pi. I have been using Raspbian Wheezy for a couple of years now (about 6 years to be exact), which is a custom build of debian wheezy armhf for arm-v6. I had great success using two Raspberry Pi model B with a 12 volt power supply and a Uniden 12v 15 inch TV/Monitor/DVD player (which can to 720p natively). So I bought three Raspberry Pi 2 B+ and a 21 inch Uniden 12v Monitor (which can do 1080p natively). After using one of the RaspPI 2 B+ for about 6 months with public internet access points, around christmas 2015 I finally dragged out another one fitted with a 480x320 touch screen and started using the new Raspbian Jessie distro. This is unlike Debian Wheezy in that it is basically a standard debian jessie armhf build for arm-v7l with only a couple of custom built parts.

Debian Jessie on Raspberry Pi 2 B+ works fine, but I noticed quite a few little issues that makes this distribution heavy weight, even with the default LXDE / LXpanel Desktop setup. After about 6 months of not using it as my main internet machine, even with the updated Chromium Browser, I ran across sd-card image of the latest Devuan Beta v1. Devuan is a fork of Debian Jessie that removes the dependancy on systemd and allows other init systems. I was reading an article of how to use Runit on Devuan, that led me to find a full Desktop Distribution of Devuan, Gnuinos. The creator of which had supplied a Devuan build for Raspberry Pi 2 B+ (though not linked off the main page). And the default web browser, IceWeasel, is not a big clunky version like is available on any Raspbian distro, and does not crash alot like the default web browser, (a much improved build of) Epiphany. Yay, descent intenet AND desktop performance again.

OLD UPDATES

2011/01/16
There are new binary packages of ARAnyM v0.9.10 for PCLinuxOS available in the files section of the SourceForge project. Same format as for v0.9.9, except that now NatFeat Clipboard is enabled by default. Still no luck with SDL Blitter option, hopefully soon, needs a fix applied first. Note that you should be able to use the Mandriva packages available for download through the ARAnyM website, if you prefer them to be managed by RPM. (ARAnyM v0.9.10 for PCLinuxOS)

Also newly available, as of 7-Jan-2011, is the Official 1.17.0 version of FeeMiNT dedicated to Frank Naumann, although at this time there have been some bug-fixes applied to CVS, and I am unable to compile them at the moment (later this week maybe). This release brings a LOT of bug-fixes since the version which is on the AFROS 8.12 LiveCD, and many new enhancements and bug-fixes to XaAES, which has now been bumped to v0.999a. Extended texturing is now a reality in Official XaAES release, so get to it and create a new theme. Just need to work on getting Gradients to be easily changed at compile time and swapped within XaAES at run-time. (FreeMiNT v1.17.0)

With this release also comes and effort to update both FreeMiNT & XaAES documentation, as well as providing it online (very useful). The Sparemint Wiki is now the primary docs repository, all additions and edits are done online, no more need for CVS submitions. As a result, with the use of a tool, wiki docs are converted into UDO format, which can generate any number of documentation formats, including .HTML, .STG (ST Guide), .HYP, and .PDF. Also there is now a Themes and Extended Textures section in the XaAES documentation. (XaAES Wiki)

2010/07/18
Some of the binaries have been updated, like Teradesk v4.03p (which offers X & Y offsets for the start of the icons, a must have for certain MyAES settings), and the long awaited "official" extended texture for XaAES. These are in a new folder in the CVS, and will be in the final .ZIP download which should be available soon. This allows for incrimental update and possible rollback, as well as not having to modify scripts, do extra checks, etc.

2009/12/11
There are new XaAES title texture examples on both the CVS and my skins, with the original, if anyone wants to play with ideas for 1600x21 left aligned title presentation. 1600 may not be enough for some platforms, in the near future this need should be gone, with addition of custom title textures for TITLE_LEFT, TITLE_RIGHT and TEXT_BACKGROUND that can be used with the current title texture.
